I’ve written about many natural beauty ideas before, but oil cleansing may be one of the simplest. It’s one of the most effective natural beauty tips I’ve found for healthy, clearer skin. Here’s how to add it to your skincare routine and why it can work so well!

I admit, I was skeptical before I first tried this oil-cleansing method. My skin is naturally oily and I wasn’t sure it would work for me. I also had very acne-prone skin when I was younger, and was afraid that a method like this would bring back the acne… I was wrong!

What Is Oil Cleansing?

It may sound crazy, but the idea of using natural oils to gently cleanse the skin makes a lot of sense. The basic idea is to use natural oils in a specific combination to cleanse and naturally balance the skin’s natural oils. This produces more nourished and moisturized skin than detergent-based face wash.

The basic concept of oil cleansers is using oil to massage and cleanse the skin. Like dissolves like and the carrier oils help dissolve the impurities stuck in pores. Warm water then opens the pores allowing the grime and sebum to be easily removed.

Fans of the OCM claim it can help with oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, and whiteheads. The types of oil you choose depend on your skin type.

Natural Makeup Remover

Many makeup products have oil in them and oil cleansing can help remove these too. Use it to remove foundation powder, mascara, and even eye makeup! Here are more DIY makeup remover ideas.

Does the Oil Cleansing Method Work?

This is the part I’m most excited to share! Even in the third trimester of pregnancy, when my skin usually goes a little hormone-crazy, I had ZERO breakouts! I used oil cleansing for several months to help avoid blemishes and remove makeup.

When I first started using oil cleansing, I had an adjustment period where my skin got worse for about a week. Most resources I’ve seen suggest this is a detox reaction as impurities are pulled from the skin. This is definitely what it seemed to be for me. After that, my skin gradually improved and by 3-4 weeks of using only oil cleansing, I had no excess oil, no dryness, and no blackheads.

I asked several friends and family members who now use the oil cleansing method how it’s worked for them, and they seemed to have the same results. Some even noted that the combination of oil cleansing and taking gelatin daily has been the best anti-aging treatment!

Oil Cleansing Ingredients

Want to try oil cleansing and see the results for yourself? All you need are some natural oils and a clean, damp washcloth!

The most common oils used are castor oil and olive oil, though you can use any natural oil. Castor oil is naturally astringent, so it helps pull impurities from the skin. This makes it ideal for oily or combination skin (and even dry skin in lesser amounts). While I use castor oil packs to help detox, it can be too harsh if it’s used undiluted as an oil cleanser.

You’ll mix the castor oil with another carrier oil (or several) that match your skin type. My other favorite oil to use is olive oil, though sunflower, safflower, or even coconut oil can work.

Which Oils Work Best for Oil Cleansing?

Some oils, like rosehip oil and castor oil, are more astringent (drying) than others. Others like olive oil can be too heavy for naturally oily skin. Here are some oil cleansing options and how they work:

Base Oils

These are oils to use in larger amounts along with the castor oil.

  • Avocado oil – Good for combination, dry, or mature skin.
  • Grapeseed oil – Lightweight oil that’s good for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Sunflower oil – A lighter oil that’s good for combination or oily skin.
  • Sweet almond oil – Good for oily, sensitive, or combination skin types.
  • Coconut oil – This works really well for some and not so well for others. It can be too drying and pore-clogging, especially for acne. Some people love it in skincare products though.
  • Olive oil – My favorite oil to use. Great for mature or dry skin, but I found it worked well for my slightly oilier skin too. Be sure to get real olive oil though since most of what’s in the store is mixed with other, cheaper oils.

Specialty Carrier Oils

These work great to add a little more customization to your OCM blend. They’re a more concentrated source of skin-loving nutrients. You can add just a little bit of these to your oil blend for big benefits.

  • Rosehip oil This astringent oil is great for more oily skin types but in smaller amounts it’s also a good anti-aging oil. Full of vitamins A and C to help with scar tissue, blemishes, and wrinkles.
  • Argan oil – Packed with vitamins A and E, antioxidants, and linoleic acid. It’s emollient, helps protect against free radical damage, is anti-aging and moisturizing.
  • Jojoba oil – Similar to skin’s sebum, jojoba has vitamins E and B as well as minerals. It won’t clog pores and it’s great for all skin types.
  • Essential oils – While these aren’t a carrier oil, they deserve a mention. They offer additional skin benefits to help with anti-aging, inflammation, and blemishes. Some of my favorites are lavender, tea tree, frankincense, sweet orange, and cedarwood. Just add a drop or two to your OCM blend (but be sure to avoid the eyes!).

Want to Buy It?: Don’t want to buy the oils yourself and DIY it? This handmade oil cleansing blend smells divine and works well for oil cleansing.

Oil Cleansing Blends

If you’re new to oil cleansing, it may take a few tries to figure out what oil blend works best for you. I used a mix of 3/4 olive oil and 1/4 castor or hazelnut oil and it’s perfect for my skin. You can also try the following:

  • Oily Skin: 1/3 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 2/3 sunflower, grapeseed, or sweet almond oil.
  • Combination Skin: 1/4 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 3/4 olive, sweet almond, sunflower, or other oil
  • Dry Skin: All nourishing oils like avocado or olive oil, or a very small amount of castor/hazelnut oil added to the nourishing oils.

Start with the suggested amounts above for your skin type and adjust if needed. When I started, I mixed up very small batches until I figured out the right blend for me.

I’ve also found that even pure coconut oil can work well once the skin has adjusted, though it can be drying on some skin types. One friend uses a half and half mix of coconut oil and olive oil that she blends in a blender to create a cream, and this works perfectly for her.

Oil Cleansing Tutorial

Now that you know which oils to use, here’s how to do the OCM!

  1. Pour a quarter-sized amount of the oil blend into your hand and massage onto your dry skin. Use smooth circular strokes to massage it in for 1-2 minutes. If you’re wearing makeup no need to wash it off first!
  2. Optional: Leave the oil on for up to 10 minutes to deeply clean skin cells and pores.
  3. Soak a clean washcloth in very hot water and place the damp cloth over your face for a minute or so. This creates steam to remove any oils and skin impurities. Repeat if needed.
  4. Use the washcloth to gently remove any remaining oil. There will still be a thin layer of oil on the skin and this is beneficial.
  5. Most people don’t need a moisturizer after the adjustment period. However, if you still have dry skin, try reducing the castor oil in your blend and use a little lotion to moisturize.

Oil Cleansing Method FAQs

Oil Cleansing With Acne

It’s normal for it to take a week or so for the skin to adjust. You may even see more oily skin or breakouts during this time as impurities leave the skin. If you can, resist the urge to use harsh soaps or facial cleansers as it will make the adjustment period take longer.

You can also speed up the detox process by using a clay face mask once or twice a week.

The Oils Aren’t Working For me

Even if you don’t have acne-prone skin you may still have an adjustment period. And you’ll likely have to experiment with different oils to find your perfect oil ratio. If your skin is too dry afterward then reduce the castor oil (or rosehip oil if using). If it’s way too greasy, try a lighter-weight oil or increase the castor oil used.

If you find your skin really doesn’t like this after a month (and you’ve already tried different oils) then the OCM may not be a good option for your skin.

Cleaning Up Afterward

If you do this in the shower, make sure to clean your shower floor regularly so it doesn’t get slippery! Some readers have also asked how to clean the washcloth afterward. I do a separate load of laundry for them and wash on hot. You can also follow the wash up with a vinegar rinse before drying.

Can you mix the oils together in a bottle, etc. or do you keep them separate until you use them?

I do so love your perspective, your blog, all your information! It is so helpful and all in one place. Plus I love how you often refer and include other “experts” information.

I’m wondering about adding a drop or two of an essential oil to the mix? I don’t have one in mind, but the fragrance would be a plus. Also I have macadamia nut oil, any comments on this oil to use or blend with?

    Thanks for all Katie!!!!

    Hi there,

I am wondering what you would recommend if you work out daily. I rinse my face just with water in the am and have been using oil to cleanse before I go to get but I am wondering if I need to wash my face with the oil or something at lunch after I work out because I have been breaking out but it might just be the process of adjusting to using oil. I have been doing this for about a month. Your website is phenomenal by the way!! and my kids love the recipes. Pumpkin pancakes have been a hit!

  4. Sarah Avatar

Thanks so much for all the helpful information! Do I clean my face in the AM with oil as well? If not, what should I be using?

I’ve been using this method every night – and honey every morning – for the last couple of weeks. I couldn’t be happier. I’ve spent so much money on so many brands of face washes and moisturizers and never achieved the results I wanted. After only a couple weeks my skin is so clear and the redness in my cheeks is all but gone. Thank you so much for sharing your insights. I’ve learned so much from you!

The first day I used the oil cleansing method with olive and castor oil, someone asked me if I had on base makeup (I didn’t). It brightened my skin after one use. I wish I found this much sooner. I have been doing the OCM for over a week now and loving that I don’t have to buy any more skin care products! And my skin is super, super soft!

I just wanted to let you all know that I switched up my ocm by parts to 9parts=sunflower oil…1part=casteroil…8drops rosemary essential oil. REO has further improved my skin tone, the redness on my cheeks is extremely faint (close to extinct), and the aroma from rosemary is soothing…calming…uplifting.
Rosemary essential oil is antimicrobial, antiviral & is a natural antibiotic. Its uses are multitude!! I can’t say enough about the ocm…and now I wear no make-up…nothing at all and I am loving it. I do not like make-up any way but now I look fresh faced at 55…Thanks Katie once again…I have spread the word to every one I know…

I wanted to say that I have been following this site for 2 years now and every single new natural way of doing things that I have tried has worked wonderfully. I regret to say, however, that this was a complete disaster. In my teens and twenties, I had pretty bad acne. But it cleared up in recent years as I changed my diet to grain free, sugar free, paleo. I also used apple cider vinegar on my face as an astrigent that worked really well. I saw this post and thought it would be a great way to use something natural on my skin instead of soap, and from everyone’s positive comments, I figured it was fool proof. I was really excited to do this and have naturally flawless skin. I started a little over a month ago. I wasn’t alarmed when I started to get mild breakouts since you explained that there was a one week adjustment period. After 2 weeks, the breakouts got worse but I kept on following the instructions exactly. By 3 weeks, I left a comment/question on this post and someone suggested that I try another combination of oils. I did change to coconut/castor oil at that point, but it did not help, the damage was done. Now I have full-blown cystic acne. It’s very painful, all over my chin and mouth and it hurts to talk or eat. I wish I could attach a picture of just how bad it looks now, even after a few days of going back to ACV. I may even have to get time off work and pay money to go to a dermatologist, that’s how bad it is. Apparently this method works for most people based on the comments I have read, but I would have appreciated a warning that this doesn’t work for everyone. It has been a complete disaster and now I am miserable from what it has done to my face. It’s so bad that I don’t even want to go out in public. I went from having virtually clear skin to having severe cystic acne, so I think it’s safe to say that the oil is what made me break out given that it was the only thing I did differently at the time. And believe me, I followed the instructions exactly. I read this post so many times just to make sure I was not doing anything wrong. So all I ask is that maybe you should give add a warning to your post that this method does not work for everyone. Thanks.

Sarah, Fit Bottomed Zone shares what she is doing in her own day to day life

she does not say “DO THIS – IT’S A CURE ALL”

on top of this, if you read through the comments before starting you would have seen that it doesn’t work for everyone
please accept some responsibility, there are hundreds, if not thousands of websites, blogs and forums dedicated to oil cleansing. Which would have given you a variety of responses.

I’m really sorry that this hasn’t worked out for you. But there are still loads of different oil combinations to use. In fact, if you googled it more, the oils that people often react to are olive oil or coconut oil.

Please do not give up hope. I’m sure it will get better, but please also do not blame Fit Bottomed Zone for your skin either. You’re an adult, you made a decision

      1. sarah Avatar

I would like to know how you came to the conclusion that I was blaming Fit Bottomed Zone in any way? If YOU had actually read MY comment, you would have realized that I very respectfully explained my experience and then made a suggestion that there should be a warning that this doesn’t work for everyone. I am sorry that I didn’t have all day to read the thousands of comments that have been left on this post. I scrolled through the first few hundred comments and did not see any negative comments, so I assumed it would work. This has been a nightmare and I thought it was important to let others know so the same thing doesn’t happen to them. I don’t appreciate insults and false accusations. I have always taken full responsibility for my choices.

      @sarah i agree 100%

i’m now trying to make my skin go back to how it was 🙁 i have normal/dry skin and it was fine but i wanted to try a new skin regimen, well when i first started i couldn’t beleive how great my skin was feeling and LOOKING! everyone would compliment me for it, but then it got ugly…i started breaking out when i never actually did before and i had a couple of cystic acne but thought it was an adjustment period but still didn’t sit right since at first it looked great? well needless to say i stopped after a month bc i didn’t want it to get worse ((IT WAS GETTING WAY WORSE) anyway i had to go back to my old routine of cleansers and reg. moisturizers, i hated to do this but i had to, i also did follow the instructions very well and had diff. oils and experimented, so i’m still dealing with a couple of blemishes and some milia which i’ve never had to deal with before in my life even as a teen 🙁

i guess that saying applies to me: if it ain’t broken don’t fix it!

  9. Sloane Avatar

Do you have any suggestions for where to buy the containers you use for things like this? A mason jar is too big and I don’t want to keep it in a plastic tupperware container. Thanks!

  10. Gina Avatar

First off: I love your blog. I swear every time I Google something for a natural alternative to something, your site comes up.
I’ve been all over the place on trying to find a facial cleansing regimen that works for me. I have cystic acne that is especially prominent around the chin, cheeks and jaw line. I have tried both birth control and antibiotics to combat it, but have not had success with either. Nor are those things I want to have to continually put into my body anyway. I have tried more natural or “clean” methods within the last year and haven’t really had any luck. The worst part about this acne is the scarring. The lower half of my face is covered with dark spots that remain from the deep cystic acne. I think my worst habit is that I have a hard time sticking to a method to really see if it works. I also change multiple components at once so I really have know way of knowing which component was the culprit or if one of the components may have been helping me. If my skin breaks out bad I am quick to try something else or wash excessively to clear it up.
I am going to try this asap and force myself to stick to it for a few weeks to see if it works. Fingers crossed!!
What is your regimen? Do you do this every night? What about in the morning? And do you put any oil on for moisturizing?
Lastly, what are your thoughts on the clarisonic or similar type products? Or have you tried them before? Thanks again for your awesome blog! 🙂

    1. Diana Avatar

I do the ocm every evening and this is the only time I clean my skin. In the morning I rinse my face with cool purified water…thats all. Look up rosemary essential oil…it is antimicrobial, antivirial & is a natural antibiotic. The uses are tremendous. By adding REO to your OCM regimine it will naturally lighten the dark spots and soften the scarring. Type in rosemary essential oil for skin and you will have plenty of information to read and be informed by. I use by parts for the OCM 9=parts sunflower oil, 1=part casteroil & 8 drops rosemary essential oil. I am 55 and I wear no makeup…I have been using the OCM for 8mths and it has cleared up the redness on my cheeks, the basil skin cell sores on my forehead & shrunk my pores. Keep up with the program and watch the changes in your skin…give yourself time for the changes to occur…you are worth the time to fell beautiful.

I started doing this over 3 weeks ago and my skin is still breaking out. In fact the breakouts have gotten gradually worse since I started. I have followed the instructions exactly. I did the oil cleansing every night and have not used any other soaps or products on my face. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I have oily skin so I have been using a mixture of 1/3 castor oil and 2/3 olive oil. Is this still the adjustment period? Does it sometimes take 3 weeks or longer for skin to adjust?

    1. Emma Avatar

Maybe try a different oil combination? I’ve read up that a few people didn’t take to the olive oil well. Some people suit the jojoba or almond oil better instead

    2. Tali Avatar

Sarah, I’ve heard olive oil is not good for oily skin. Grapeseed or sunflower seem to be what I’ve seen for recommendations. I’ve also been doing this for almost 3 weeks and am breaking out worse than ever! I was really hoping the transition period would be over by now! It’s getting pretty gross.

I tried using EVOO too though my skin did not take well to that oil. i shifted to sunflowr oil instead and I found that it is gentler to my skin and has cleared up beautifully. I use 9 pts sunflower oil, 1 pt caster oil & 12 drops rosemary essential oil…awsome results for me. Readjust your oils and parts until u find what works for you.

I stumbled upon oil cleansing about 10 months ago. At first, I thought the idea was very weird, but I wanted to try it. I’m so glad I did. I use unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil. My face is clear and soft. I’ll never, ever use soap again.

Hi ! I am also using oil cleansing method and I feel satisfied with it..the only problem is that I dont know how to clean the washcloth. My mother is really pissed at me that she had to throw each towel away because It cant be washed properly..the oil stays there and It cant be used again. How do you solve this ? Or ..Do you always toss it after some time and buy a new one?
Thank youuu for the answer 🙂

Hi fitbottomedzone, I see you’ve been really dedicated to answering all the questions on this blog. Thank you so much 🙂

I’ve started making my own body lotion with the coconut oil, and have now begun with OCM using castor oil and Olive oil – 2 days in so fingers crossed!

Just a quick question, I tend to workout during my lunch breaks. What would you recommend I use on a sweaty face post workout? I don’t think I would have the time or the patience to do OCM in the gym changing rooms.

    thanks,

Hi Katie, I must apologise, I asked such a stupi question the other day, why Epson salt in the oil cleansing. It was probably one of the nights I was burning midnight oil.
Its really such a silly question, because I know the answer is to get magnesium in via the skin!!!
Sorry old age has really caught up with me.

I am now living in America and where i’m living, when it is cold, we get lots of snow so t is really cold!, and when it is summer it is very dry and there is no humidity so I don’t know if that have any thing to do with it, my hair also damage real bad that i have to cut it all off, so please can some body tell me what to do!!, i am in my 40s but i know my body it wasn’t like this before!
